Breaking News: Eddie's Gambling Good Luck Charm Is Eating Carrot Cake
This really struck a chord with me, and I fancy that it’ll strike a chord with you all too. Typically when Eddie says something outrageous like this, I’ll spin it and tweet about it in a way that doesn’t tell the full story solely to get under Eddie’s skin. That’s why he calls me SlanderSoxDave, because he feels like I slander his good, unsullied name on the reg.
But I just couldn’t bring myself to do that in this instance. Now you may be wondering why I asked about carrot cake in the first place. The reason is simple: I was scrolling through IG in the office and stumbled upon this post:
Looks fucking delicious. So I asked Ed if he’s a carrot cake guy and would like to cook this carrot cake and eat it with me, fully expecting him to say he’ll only eat cake from a very specific bakery on the Northwest Side of Chicago, but nope. He said, and I quote, “I’m a huge carrot cake guy, it’s my good luck charm.”
Now by now you all know that Eddie’s a bit of a weirdo, and I mean that in the most endearing way possible. When he interviews garbage men, exterminators or meat slicers from the local deli on Dog Walk, it’s not to throw shade at their common man professions or poke fun at them, it’s because his brain is genuinely curious about the innards of those sorts of people.
So when he told me carrot cake was his good luck charm, I knew there’d be a very interesting backstory. It was simple; he loves carrot cake because he used to eat it every time he’d hit a rough streak at Maywood Park (RIPIP) and it’d *sometimes* turn his luck around.
Keyword sometimes. We ALL have that tradition as degenerates. For me personally? One time like 6-7 years ago my dad and I went to the Boat in Aurora and played Hollywood Nights by Bob Segar on the way there
We walked out of the casino thousandaires that night, and there won’t ever be another trip to the hell hole that is the Hollywood Casino of Aurora without playing that magical jam. Have we won once since? Honestly I don’t think so. But it’s the long game. The more you play, the better your chances of winning. Regression to the mean.
So my question is simple: what is your random good luck charm when gambling? Can be anything from eating carrot cake to rubbing one out before kickoff to a lucky handshake.
